Novel Methods for Pulse Wave Velocity Measurement

چکیده
The great incidence of cardiovascular (CV) diseases in the world spurs the search for new solutions to enable an early detection of pathological processes and provides more precise diagnosis based in multi-parameters assessment. The pulse wave velocity (PWV) is considered one of the most important clinical parameters for evaluate the CV risk, vascular adaptation, and therapeutic efficacy. Several studies were dedicated to find the relationship between PWV measurement and pathological status in different diseases, and proved the relevance of this parameter. The commercial devices dedicate to PWV estimation make a regional assessment (measured between two vessels), however a local measurement is more precise evaluation of artery condition, taking into account the differences in the structure of arteries. Moreover, the current devices present some limitations due to the contact nature. Emerging trends in CV monitoring are moving away from more invasive technologies to non-invasive and non-contact solutions. The great challenge is to explore the new instrumental solutions that allow the PWV assessment with fewer approximations for an accurately evaluation and relatively inexpensive techniques in order to be used in the clinical routine.

Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity assessment using novel cuff-based techniques: comparison with tonometric measurement.
BACKGROUND Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity, a predictor of cardiovascular outcome, is conventionally measured using a tonometer sequentially placed upon the carotid and femoral arteries, gated using an electrocardiogram. Leg cuff detection of the femoral pulse removes the need for signal gating, reduces the time required for a single measurement, but gives different pulse wave velocity valu...
متن کاملValidity and reproducibility of arterial pulse wave velocity measurement using new device with oscillometric technique: A pilot study
BACKGROUND Availability of a range of techniques and devices allow measurement of many variables related to the stiffness of large or medium sized arteries. There is good evidence that, pulse wave velocity is a relatively simple measurement and is a good indicator of changes in arterial properties. The pulse wave velocity calculated from pulse wave recording by other methods like doppler or ton...

Arterial stiffness is considered an increasingly important biomarker in the evaluation of cardiovascular risk. The gold standard for assessment of arterial stiffness is measurement of aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV). The aim of the present study is to establish a new method for measurement of aortic PWV by using Photoelectric technique coupled with ECG. We studied 36 healthy male subjects betw...
متن کاملA Bio Signal Processing System for Pulse Wave Velocity Detection
Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is the most popular index to assessment the arterial stiffness. Currently, several non-invasive examination methods with single channel for PWV are announced. This paper proposes a non-invasive digital volume pulse (DVP) measuring system using a dual channel simultaneous measurement method try to meet the demands for home healthcare equipment which is easy to operate. ...
متن کاملHybrid ANFIS with ant colony optimization algorithm for prediction of shear wave velocity from a carbonate reservoir in Iran
Shear wave velocity (Vs) data are key information for petrophysical, geophysical and geomechanical studies. Although compressional wave velocity (Vp) measurements exist in almost all wells, shear wave velocity is not recorded for most of elderly wells due to lack of technologic tools. Furthermore, measurement of shear wave velocity is to some extent costly. This study proposes a novel methodolo...
متن کاملAortic pulse wave velocity assessment in CMR: a novel method for transit time estimation
Background Aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV) is considered as the “gold standard” measurement of arterial stiffness and is commonly calculated as the ratio between the distance separating two locations along the artery and the transit time (Δt) needed for the pressure or velocity wave to cover this distance. PWV is increasingly assessed by means of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR). Our go...
